SAATVA MATTRESS REVIEWS 2022: WHAT'S SO SPECIAL ABOUT THIS MATTRESS?

2022-07-15 19:29:26 By : Mr. Klaus Xu

As an independent student newspaper and the paper of record for the city of Berkeley, the Daily Cal has been communicating important updates during this pandemic. Your support is essential to maintaining this coverage.

Founded in 2010, Saatva specializes in direct-to-consumer luxury mattresses under three brand names: Saatva, Loom & Leaf, and Zenhaven. Between these three brands, the company sells several mattress models, including the all-foam Loom & Leaf; the latex Zenhaven; the airbed, Solaire; and the hybrid Saatva.

The Saatva Mattress, also called the Saatva Classic, combines two layers of coils, two layers of polyfoam, and a thin layer of memory foam. The Saatva comes in three firmness options, which it calls Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm. These options correspond to soft (3 on the 10-point firmness scale where 10 is firmest), medium firm (6), and firm (8) respectively.

The Saatva is also available in two height options: 11.5 inches and 14.5 inches. While the 11.5-inch version falls in the average thickness range, the 14.5-inch option is high-profile, so it may require deeper sheets.

This review will discuss the Saatva Mattress in-depth. We’ll cover its construction, performance, sizing, pricing, customer reviews, and company policies. We’ll also highlight how the different versions of the mattress vary in performance and who each may be best for.

SAATVA CLASSIC MATTRESS: REVIEW IN BRIEF

The Saatva Classic mattress is a luxury innerspring hybrid that comes in your choice of three firmness levels and two heights, meaning it suits a wide range of sleeping positions and body types. The Saatva Classic sits at the top of our best mattress guide thanks to its exceptional build quality and high levels of support and comfort, and all for a reasonable price compared to what you would pay for a similar handcrafted premium mattress sold in store.

Also known as the Saatva Mattress, the Classic is one of the more affordable hybrids in the brand’s range, with a starting price of $887 for a twin size. The Saatva Classic is made using two layers of coils, two layers of polyfoam, and a layer of contouring memory foam.

As we’ll explain further into our review, it has a responsive, bouncy feel, coupled with a good deal of cushioning. It’s designed to relieve major pressure points in your back, neck and shoulders, and comes in two heights (11.5 inches or 14.5 inches) and three firmness options: Plush Soft (3 out of 10 on the firmness scale), Luxury Firm (5-7), and Firm (8). We tested a queen size Saatva Classic mattress, choosing the 14.5” height and a firm feel.

A queen size is priced $1,695 when not on sale, which is very competitive compared to the price of other luxury hybrids such as as the Leesa Hybrid ($1,899) and the Tempur-Pedic Tempur Adapt (from $2,399). We expect to see it drop further during the forthcoming 4th of July mattress sale event too.

How does Saatva make such premium, handcrafted mattresses for less? It’s mainly an online-only brand (bar a few showrooms), so they can invest more in materials and manufacturing, and pass those savings on to you in the form of cheaper prices.

SAATVA CLASSIC MATTRESS: AT A GLANCE

Saatva also offers free White Glove Delivery, a premium shipping method that involves the brand’s installation team delivering the Classic to your bedroom, then setting it up so that it’s ready for you to sleep on. As we discovered during our review process, the Saatva Classic is heavy, so having this aspect handled for you is brilliant. Saatva will also remove your old mattress if needed, but you’ll need to arrange this in advance. Free White Glove Delivery isn’t exclusive to Saatva though – other leading brands offer the same.

We tested the Saatva Classic for three consecutive weeks and enjoyed sleeping on it. While the Firm version won’t suit everyone, we loved the mix of bounce, support and cushioning, with the top layer cradling our back, shoulders and hips through a range of sleeping positions. Saatva makes a lot of fuss about its patented Lumbar Zone technology to ensure good spinal alignment, and we feel as though there is good lumbar support here compared to cheaper mattresses we have tested, including the Nectar Original (see our Nectar Mattress review for more).

Overall, the Classic performed very well during testing and we’d recommend it to all sleepers looking to upgrade to a more plush, comfortable and supportive mattress. It regulates temperature well (good news for warm sleepers prone to overheating), and is built to a high standard. The pressure relief is excellent too, but there is a degree of motion transfer on the softer versions due to the bouncy nature of the Saatva Classic. It isn’t a deal-breaker, but something we’d flag up to couples sharing a bed.

Saatva offers a 180-night trial with all of its mattresses, but there is a downside: if you want to return or exchange the Classic you’ll have to pay a $99 fee. In an age where a lot of competitor brands are offering free returns as well as free shipping, this is disappointing.

While the Saatva Classic mattress is reasonably priced compared to comparable luxury handcrafted hybrids anyway, the brand also runs regular promotions to reduce the cost further. As we explain in our Saatva mattress sale guide, you can regularly save up to $250 on the Classic, depending on the size.

The Saatva Classic mattress has racked up thousands of positive user reviews, though it isn’t without its criticisms. According to the brand, the hybrid has also earned a Seal of Approval from the Congress of Chiropractic State Associations. In this in-depth review we test every major aspect of the Classic, including comfort, pressure relief, motion isolation, temperature regulation and edge support, to help you figure out if it’s the right choice for your sleep or not.

The Saatva Classic is our No 1 pick of innerspring hybrids, and delivers a luxury hotel feel in your own bedroom. It’s customizable, with three firmness levels and two heights to pick from, and comes with some great perks including free White Glove Delivery. You’ll have 180 nights to trial it at home, with Saatva’s installation team setting up the mattress for you and removing your old one as needed.

SAATVA CLASSIC MATTRESS: PRICES AND DEALS

A queen size Saatva Classic retails for $1,695

Reasonably priced compared to other luxury hybrids

Often on sale with up to $250 off the bigger sizes

The Saatva Classic mattress is a luxury innerspring hybrid and therefore costs more than the average hybrid. However we feel that it’s well-priced for the build quality and materials used, and for the level of customization you get in terms of firmness and height. You’d pay a lot more for a handcrafted bed of this quality in store, and it’s regularly discounted by up to $250.

A queen size Saatva Classic currently retails for $1,695, with a twin sized priced just $887. Saatva does increase its prices regularly, so you may find that the costs fluctuate depending on the time of year we’re in. A good time to buy the Saatva Classic is during the Black Friday mattress deals and sales, as this is when we typically see the lowest prices coupled with the biggest savings.

It’s more expensive than the DreamCloud Luxury Hybrid(opens in new tab), which retails in a queen size for $1,199, and is much closer in price to the WinkBeds Mattress ($1,799 for a queen size at WinkBeds(opens in new tab)). The Saatva Classic is more affordable than other premium hybrids though, including the Casper Wave Hybrid (a queen size retails for $2,895 at Casper(opens in new tab)).

Here’s the official pricing for the Saatva Classic mattress:

As with all of Saatva’s beds, the Classic comes with a 180-night trial, giving you nearly six months to test it for yourself to ensure it’s the right choice. If you change your mind during the trial, you will have to pay a $99 processing fee to return the Classic or to exchange it for a different firmness.

Saatva does not resell mattresses that are returned, and instead either donates them to veterans’ shelters or gives them to employees. As part of the brand’s free white glove delivery service, the Saatva installation team will remove your old mattress and foundation for free as long as they aren’t stained.

SAATVA CLASSIC MATTRESS: FIRMNESS AND COMFORT

The Saatva Classic mattress with a gray blanket draped over one side

We reviewed the Firm version (8 out of 10)

Great lumbar support for back and side sleepers

Might be too firm for lightweight side sleepers

There are three different versions of the Saatva Classic mattress: a Plush Soft (rated 3 out of 10 on the firmness scale), a Luxury Firm (rated 5-7 out of 10) and a Firm (8 out of 10) feel.

The softest feel is the Plush Soft, designed with extra padding in the pillow top and recommended for side sleepers who enjoy more of a contouring hug, plus lightweight bodies who don’t sleep well on a firm bed.

The Luxury Firm is the most popular choice according to Saatva, and is chosen by 82% of people who buy the Saatva Classic. This firmness is designed to closely match that of luxury hotel beds and is suited to most sleeping styles and body types.

We reviewed the Firm version and were surprised at just how true it was. Since both our reviewers prefer a firm-ish mattress, we rated it a 5 out of 5 for firmness. That said, it’s not at all like sleeping on a board since the plush pillow top provides some sink-in value and makes for a very comfortable night’s sleep.

Remember, mattress firmness is subjective and your height, weight, and sleep needs play a role in how comfortable you will find the Saatva Classic. That’s why, in addition to conducting our own review, we also analyze user reviews to see what customers think of it too. We’ll come to those shortly.

SHOULD YOU BUY THE SAATVA CLASSIC MATTRESS?

The Saatva Classic is a luxury hybrid mattress focused on all-over comfort and support. We found the firm model to be perfect for side and back sleeping, though combination and stomach sleepers may prefer the Plush Soft or Luxury Firm models as these will offer higher levels of contouring and cushioning.

Motion isolation is good in the Firm model and the edge support system is superior, but customers have mentioned that motion transfer occurs in the softer models. The Saatva Classic mattress is a great choice for single sleepers and for couples who don’t go to bed at the same time. However we make this statement based on our experience of testing the Firm version, so you may have a different experience and feel more bounce with the Plush Soft.

If you prefer a memory foam mattress, then check out the Saatva Loom and Leaf (priced from $1,049 at Saatva(opens in new tab)). This all-foam model comes in a Relaxed Firm or a Firm feel. Or, if you have a smaller budget, look at the DreamCloud Luxury Hybrid (priced from $1,273 at DreamCloud(opens in new tab)), also designed with enhanced back support.

Ultimately, with its 180-night trial, 15-year warranty and choice of firmness and heights, we feel the Saatva Classic is a worthy investment for your sleep, especially if you want a tall, luxurious innerspring hybrid to deliver ample levels of support, comfort and temperature regulation.

SAATVA MATTRESS does not sag in any way.

Sagging is typically the result of normal wear-and-tear to your mattress. The foam materials used in mattresses tend to soften over time, as they are exposed to significant pressure every night from the sleeper’s body. Over time, this gradual softening of foam leads to a feeling of sagging, and less even support.

The Saatva Mattress comes with a 1lifetime warranty. For the first two years of the warranty period, Saatva will replace mattresses it finds to have qualifying defects. Beginning in year 3, Saatva will repair and re-cover the mattress, and the customer will be responsible for a $149 transportation charge.

A “Fairness Replacement Option” is also available as a remedy for defective mattresses. This option allows you to keep your original mattress and get a new mattress at a reduced rate.

This warranty applies to the original purchaser of the mattress. The mattress must have been used on a proper foundation and be free of abuse. Additional terms and conditions apply.
