Looking back into the Four Wheeler archives, we found Ed Meyers' 1986 Ford F-250 with a custom-made bed to match. A career contractor, Ed possessed a firm belief in having the right tools for the job, and considered his truck to be one of his most valuable assets.

Ed decided on building a custom trailer when he was installing the utility bed on his 1986 Ford F-250. It wasn't long before the stock bed, recently separated from the truck, received its own hand built frame, 5,000-pound-capacity axle, Hellwig springs, and other goodies.

Ed's custom trailer used a frame made from 4-inch channel steel and pads to mount the two components. Fitting the bed to the frame was seamless, and Ed went to work adding BFGoodrich mud-terrains, U.S. Custom spoke wheels, bedliner, and a Stockland camper shell. Inside the trailer, Ed built a storage drawer and added a Nelson bumper and Weatherguard tongue-mounted toolbox. An Atwood on the tongue made for quick uncoupling.

The Ford's powertrain featured a 460ci Engine, C6 transmission, and BorgWarner 13-56 transfer case. Axles were as they came from the factory, and each differential held 4.10:1 gears with a limited-slip in the rear. The truck was painted in Dupont Centari Shadow Blue to match the trailer and Ed's striping work carried across the truck and trailer.

Ed purchased the F-250 new and quickly added its custom aftermarket bed. The false floor concealed two bed-length drawers, and Ed good made use of the heavy-duty diamond-plate floor, onboard generator, and vise.

In episode 1 of the new 4x4 Garage video series , host Christian Hazel tears down the suspension of a 1988 Ford Bronco for a 6-inch Superlift system and dives into the axles to prep them for new 4.88 gears and Eaton TrueTrac differentials to support the 37x12.50R17 Falken A/T3W all-terrain tires for awesome performance.
