PINOLA, Ind. – Mattress manufacturer Corsicana Mattress Co. is closing its new boxed bed manufacturing facility that opened here in March.

The company opened the 165,000-square-foot factory after operating in a temporary facility since late 2020. When the factory was announced, Corsicana said it would employ 350 people and produce up to 1,500 mattresses a day at full capacity.

News of the closing was confirmed by the president of the LaPorte (Indiana) County Commissioners, who shared the news on her social media. Sheila Brillson Matias shared that she and other local officials had a call with Corsicana CEO Eric Rhea regarding the closure.

Matias’ post shared “ … the conversation was detailed regarding their current business outlook and focused on the industry-specific facts that have negatively affected this plant. Corsicana LaPorte is impacted by the recent sale of the entire company, a corporate reorganization and reduced consumer spending. The CEO had great things to say about our workforce; it’s clear we cannot change their business-driven decision, but we now need to focus on these employees.”

The factory was opened under the leadership of Michael Thompson, the former Corsicana CEO who left the company last month. Industry veteran Rhea took over shortly after Thompson’s resignation.

The company had been expanding factories and was in the process of building a new headquarters in Corsicana, Texas. Corsicana broke ground on the factory in October.

According to local news outlets, employees at the factory were told Sunday that the factory would be closing.

Corsicana officials did not respond Wednesday night for requests for more information. However, this is a developing story. Be sure to check back for updates.
