On May 19, the International Sleep Products Association released the Bedding Market Quarterly for the first quarter of 2021. (Free log-in required, then click “Resources”->”Statistics”->”Industry Sales Data.” The BMQ is free to ISPA members, paywall applies to all others.)

In reviewing the report findings, please note that the 2020 U.S.-produced data are revised due to errors in previously reported data.

This issue of the Bedding Market Quarterly shows that for the first quarter of 2021, total unit shipments of mattresses, foundations and motion foundations from U.S. producers and from imports were down 4.9%, compared with comparable data in the same period of 2020. The value of those units increased 7%.

Turning to the total numbers for reported U.S.-produced mattresses and foundations, unit shipments increased 2.6% and the dollar value of those shipments rose 14%, compared with the prior-year quarter. The average unit selling price in the quarter increased 11.1%.

Looking at U.S.-produced mattress shipments, only, wholesale units increased 5.8% and their dollar value grew 15.8%, yielding an AUP increase of 9.4%, compared with the first quarter of 2021.

The Bedding Market Quarterly reports U.S. (including Puerto Rico) sales activity based on data provided by 14 U.S. mattress producers. The participating companies accounted for 51.9% of the mattress units shipped and 67.2% of the wholesale market revenue for mattresses sold in 2020. The experience of these participants as a group does not necessarily reflect those of the entire mattress manufacturing industry. Furthermore, comparisons of Bedding Market Quarterly results for different time periods can be affected by a number of factors, including differences in the number of workdays and holiday promotions in a given quarter, weather conditions, etc.
