There was a problem. Please refresh the page and try again.

About a year ago I made a grave mistake: I bought a cheap mattress. As someone who lucked out on a college student deal on my first mattress, I assumed my low budget would get me something decent. But, I was very wrong. I tried to remedy the situation by buying a standard memory foam mattress topper and it didn’t help much. I went from an uncomfortable springy mattress to a topper that made me feel like I was being swallowed by my bed.

Enter the TEMPUR-Topper Supreme Mattress topper. Featuring the same foam technology as Tempur-Pedic's mattress range, the proprietary Tempur material adapts to a person’s shape, weight, and temperature for the best in pressure relief, in a three-inch slab, wrapped in a washable hypoallergenic cover. This mattress topper has truly transformed my sleeping experience from deep discomfort to no longer stirring in the night. My partner and I wake up in the morning refreshed, and now we're adamant that the TEMPUR-Topper Supreme is one of the best mattress toppers you can buy.

People who are looking to upgrade their comfort without having to buy the best mattress as a replacement. Specifically, people who want to experience the Tempur-Pedic signature comfort on a budget.

While a mattress may be impractical to lug on a camping trip, the TEMPUR-Topper Supreme is not. It can also be placed on a sofa bed or sofa cushions to provide overnight guests with extra comfort. For college students, the mattress topper will instantly upgrade the usual standard-issue mattress.

The TEMPUR-Topper Supreme will also suit people who share a bed due to its medium firmness that satisfies a wide range of sleeping position preferences and comfort levels. For an extra $80, you can also upgrade to a cooling topper for those individuals who sleep extra hot. The topper also reduces motion transfer which is a must for people sharing a bed.

The topper ships directly to your door via FedEx when purchased from Tempur-Pedic. The box is not light but one person can manage the trip from the front door to the bedroom as well as set it up alone.

After removing the outer box, which clearly states which size you got (in my case a Queen or QN), you get to the second box which houses the mattress topper. The box clearly tells you what level of fitness (medium) and the height in inches (3”) within.

The TEMPUR-Topper Supreme is compressed, rolled, and wrapped in protective plastic. After removing the plastic carefully, the topper begins to unroll and expand. I suggest releasing it from the wrapping on the mattress, especially if you’re just one person, so you can easily adjust it.

My first thought when I lay on it for the first time is that I could take a nap right then and there.

The topper immediately adjusts to your body and weight, a perfect balance between supported and snuggled. On my back, the TEMPUR-Topper Supreme adjusted to contour the bottom half of my body, making sure my back had the support it needed to sleep comfortably.

I tend to be a side sleeper (specifically on my right side) and when I was sleeping on a previous topper (memory foam), my entire body would sink, creating a massive crater in my bed that was slow to return to its original position. The TEMPUR-Topper Supreme molds around your body and prevents sinking which characterizes many memory foam mattress toppers.

One of my favorite aspects of the TEMPUR-Topper Supreme is how quickly the topper adjusts around you if you change positions in the middle of the night. As someone who shares a bed with a significant other who wakes up early, I barely feel it when he gets up.

I tend to run cold and my partner runs hot. While I am satisfied with how I sleep on the TEMPUR-Topper, Supreme someone like my partner may want to spend an extra $80 on the COOL-TO-TOUCH cover, which is a topper for the topper that makes it comparable to the best cooling mattress pads.

The TEMPUR-Topper Supreme does not come with straps to ensure it doesn’t move on the mattress. After using it for a month, I noticed the topper had slid off the mattress a couple of inches. But that was after a whole month of not adjusting, something you can do very easily every time you change your sheets. A couple of inches did not make a difference to the quality of sleep. I didn't even notice it had moved till the bottom sheet came off.

When I first placed the topper on my mattress I noticed that it was slightly off by half an inch. This isn’t necessarily an issue because once I placed the bottom sheet on the topper and mattress, I barely noticed the slight irregularity in dimensions. One thing I recommend if you do buy this three-inch mattress topper is buying deeper pocket sheets to account for that extra height.

Overall the TEMPUR-Topper Supreme mattress topper delivered on its promises.

The net weight of the filling materials is 19 lbs and the dimensions are 80 x 60 x 3 inches for the Queen size. The pad is made with three inches of its iconic TEMPUR® Material, which is the material found in all of the company’s mattresses.

Tempur-Pedic claims that its material is better than ordinary memory foam, in that its “precision-engineered cellular structure immediately and precisely adapts to your weight, shape, and temperature.” While I agree on the weight and shape aspects of that claim, my partner's experience, as well as reviews I found on Reddit, suggests that the topper doesn’t adjust to temperature as well as the company claims.

The TEMPUR-Topper Supreme should never be washed or dry cleaned but the removable cover is washable. Tempur-Pedic suggests washing in cold water and air drying or drying on a cool setting. Chlorine products or harsh stain removers should be avoided. The cover fits around the topper snugly, but not too tight where it’s difficult to remove and fit it over the topper again.

The TEMPUR-Topper Supreme can be purchased directly from the company’s website as well as any retailer that carries Tempur-Pedic such as Amazon,  Bed, Bath & Beyond, Macy’s, Mattress Firm or Target.

There is unfortunately no trial period when purchased directly from Tempur-Pedic. The Tempur-Pedic return policy states that no returns are allowed due to the personal nature of the product unless there was a product defect or the topper was damaged during delivery.

Knowing their no-return policy, I wondered what would happen if Tempur-Pedic shipped the wrong size of the TEMPUR-Topper Supreme. After an unhelpful conversation with one of their chat customer service agents, I called customer service where someone was able to answer my question. If the company ships the wrong size, the purchaser can exchange it for the right size. This is true even if the purchaser has already opened the box, although the process becomes more complicated.

To avoid the no-return policy, you may also purchase the TEMPUR-Topper Supreme from other retailers such as Amazon (opens in new tab) , Bed, Bath & Beyond (opens in new tab) , or Mattress Firm (opens in new tab) , which have return policies of their own.

Tempur-Pedic offers customers a 10-year limited warranty for the TEMPUR-Topper Supreme. The warranty covers product defects and the company will repair or replace the topper at a handling cost to the purchaser.

On Amazon (opens in new tab) , the TEMPUR-Topper Supreme holds a 4.5 stars out of 5 rating with users commenting on how great the topper relieves back pain, has upgraded their current mattress and for people who have experienced a Tempur-Pedic mattress, they say that the topper matches the comfort and quality of the original product. The few critical reviews are about temperature control and the cover in some cases, arriving torn.

There are over 7,000 reviews on the Tempur-Pedic website (opens in new tab) for the TEMPUR-Topper Supreme, which also received 4.5 stars. The vast majority of reviewers, 5,336 at the time of publication, awarded the topper 5 stars, raving about the excellent quality and comfort of the product. The main critique from the Tempur-Pedic website is that the topper moves too much and it’s not as comfortable as advertised.

I would absolutely recommend buying the TEMPUR-Topper Supreme. As someone who shares a bed with a person with different sleeping positions and firmness preferences, I found that the topper suited us both. I woke up every morning dreading leaving my cocoon of comfort.

The TEMPUR-Topper Supreme is on the higher end for a foam topper price-wise. But when you think about being able to experience the well-known TEMPUR Material sleep technology without having to purchase an entire mattress from the brand, it evens out. It adds a perfect level of softness and support and will instantly upgrade an uncomfortable mattress.

If you are looking for a mattress topper you can try out before committing, I recommend either another brand or buying from another retailer that carries the TEMPUR-Topper Supreme. Tempur-Pedic has a strict no-return policy that may not apply to other retailers. Though, in general, topper manufacturers typically have less generous trial periods as their mattress counterparts.

- Sleep position: I tend to fall asleep on my side but will change positions throughout the night frequently (but will never sleep on my stomach) - Insomnia? None - Sleep problems: If I end up in an uncomfortable position while moving in the middle of the night, I sometimes won’t adjust and wake up with pain in my back, arms, or head.   - Average sleep time:  Between 7 and 8 hours
